Allyship

Anyone can be an ally in supporting girls and developing their sporting abilities and life skills. When people decide to be an ally to girls, it empowers girl atheletes with the sustained confidence to succeed and support for when they need to try again. Tips on Integrating Male Coaches as Allies

Men who are truly dedicated to empowerment can work directly with girls and show them positive examples of cross-gender communication, behaviour and respect. However, the presence of males, regardless of the individual, has the potential to compromise a girl’s feeling of security within your space and reinforce their belief that men are in charge.

In designing sport programmes for girls, it’s important to be aware of both the risks and benefits of this dynamic to make sure the programme is a success. Thoughtfully integrating male coaches as allies can help make girls feel safe and empowered in the presence of their coach.
